’90s Hip-Hop The Real Way: The ADANAI All-Night Playlist

QQuick – when did hip-hop break through as a musical genre that matters? Gold star if you said the ‘80s.  Grandmaster Flash, Kurtis Blow, Run DMC, LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys and Public Enemy all helped bring the art form to the masses.

Next – when did hip-hop come of age? When did it become popular enough to spawn sub-genres that had enough of a following to matter? A decade later.

‘90s hip-hop; the golden age of hip-hop.  It kicked off with game changing albums from Dr. Dre, A Tribe Called Quest and Wu-Tang Clan.  It became a movement once 2Pac and Notorious B.I.G. arrived on the scene and took over as the new pop with Jay-Z and Eminem.  However, there was much more to the decade than the big names.  For many, the decade is best remembered for giving the hip-hop world mini movements like the Native Tongues[1], Boot Camp Clik, Soul Assassins, Hieroglyphics, and D.I.T.C crew (that’s Diggin In The Crates if you didn’t know).  Everyone got their groove on at The Tunnel, with Funkmaster Flex crushing Fugees and Snoop Dogg tracks on the wheels of steel, but as indicated by their Walkman, people’s tastes were quite nuanced.  The NYC kid listening to tapes of WKCR’s Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito show had a very different view of things than the kid down south rocking to Master P bootlegs – the tell tale sign that hip-hop had come of age.
